Baldock was reportedly found in his swimming pool in Greece, with his wife back in England raising the alarm after she'd been unable to contact him.

Baldock started his career with MK Dons but became a club icon at Sheffield United, where he spent seven years.

He made 219 appearances during his spell with the Blades, while also helping them earn two promotions to the Premier League in 2019 and 2023.

Sheffield United have paid tribute to Baldock, saying in a statement posted on social media: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock.

"The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him.

"The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends."

Panathinaikos wrote: “We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George.
